Areas of Delhi
Saraswati Vihar is one of the elite colonies of North West Delhi that is situated in Pitampura. It is also one of the three main administrative sub districts of North West Delhi. The name of the town means the ‘Dwelling Place of Goddess Saraswati’ which was initially surrounded by a jungle area and later acquired by the government who in turn carved out plots that were allotted to Teachers of Government Schools and hence was named after the Goddess of Arts and Learning.
Saraswati Vihar was not established up till 1978. The construction work started only after the owners of the Plots acquired loan at a cheaper rate from the Government post which the colony took shape. Before 1978, this area was a massive Jungle and by 1982, after a few houses were built, a fair percentage of people started residing in this area. Despite the establishment of a residential complex, this region had faced immense water shortage and residents had to fetch water from the nearby Rani Bagh Market in those days.
Today, Saraswati Vihar is well established with all the facilities and essential needs for a very comfortable lifestyle and convenient settlement. It is considered as one of the plush colonies of Delhi and does not face water shortage or power cuts. It homes residences that are mostly owned by Business Class Families after the Teachers sold their Plots to them.
The residential area of Saraswati Vihar is divided into 5 blocks ranging from ‘A-Block’ to ‘E-Block’ covering over 1000 homes with plot areas measuring between 1050 Sq. ft. and 3600 Sq. ft. each. It also homes a lush green park, a Police Station in ‘A-Block’ that caters to ten other neighbouring colonies, a dedicated electricity supply in ‘D-Block’ and a Bus Station in ‘E-Block’. Since, Bus services are not regular, the nearest Metro link at Pitampura brings great respite to the inhabitants of this area and the Indraprastha Gas Limited or IGL Gas supply line has also been recently installed.
The Sarvodaya Vidhalaya situated in Saraswati Vihar is a renowned Institute that was established in 1982 and many students who passed out from this institute during 1989 and 1991 were inducted into renowned engineering colleges and medical colleges.
Saraswati Vihar can also be called as a self sufficient colony that homes its own Library, Dispensary and Post Office. It also houses a number of Government and Private Banks; Mother Dairy Milk Booth; Mother Dairy Fruits & Vegetables Store; Saral MRI, which is one of the largest Diagnostic Centres in North West Delhi; Kindergarten Schools and well established & qualified Doctors who reside in and around this region.
Saraswati Vihar also homes two government schools offering courses up till the senior secondary level and one government MCD school that offer courses up till the primary level. This colony also homes four Temples, one each located at ‘A Block’ and ‘B Block’ and two located at ‘C Block’. It has three well established market places situated each at ‘A Block’, ‘C Block’ and ‘D block’ respectively. These stores cater to all the daily needs of the residents and are fringed with broad & wide open roads that have been maintained very well owing to the engaging and proactive members of the welfare society of this region.
Today, most of the original residents of Saraswati Vihar are selling their plots at very high prices to private Builders in exchange for newly constructed builder floors. A part of this region is now inhabited by business class people and the original owners while the remaining area is seen with multiple builder flats that have been sold off by the developers.
