The Surajkund Crafts Mela and Fair is a very famous handicrafts and handloom fair organised every year in Surajkund which lies 8 km from South Delhi between the 1st and the 15th of February by the Haryana Tourism Department under the supervision of the Surajkund Mela Authority which comprises of the Delhi Tourism Board, Delhi Culture Board, Handloom and Handicrafts Development Commissioner. This Delhi Fair was first organised in 1981 and became very successful and popular amongst Delhiites. It showcases the skilled craftsmanship of Painters, Sculptors, Weavers, Wood and Stone sculptors, Metal Workers, Textile printers, Silk embroidery workers, Jewellery makers, Pottery makers from the entire corner of this country and exhibits their unique style, arts and craft work. You can either view and even purchase the finest handloom and craft pieces from them.
This Fair also forms the centre of social gatherings and where families and friends can enjoy a good time together. The main objectives to form a platform for rural India to display their art work and sell to International and Domestic tourists, Educating tourist across the Globe about the technique and skill required to create these masterpieces, Introducing these artistes to Direct Buyers for future business prospects and eliminating any middleman and lastly to showcase the preserved art and skillmanship of the Indian artistes to the world are completely achieved. The backdrop of this Mela is also beautiful and set amidst green surroundings and the Surajkund Lake.
Folk and Theatre plays add more joy to this event and one can enjoy the rhythms of folk music held in an open theatre named 'Natyashala'. The music and singing mesmerises you completely and takes you back through the nostalgic lanes of History and Ancient Indian Heritage and Culture. Visitors can also enjoy lip smacking Punjabi cuisines, Chinese cuisines and South Indian cuisines.
